Xantrex DR Inverters More Xantrex reviews

The Xantrex DR Series of inverter-chargers were designed for use as stand by power applications in the Dominican Republic (DR) and other developing countries subject to rolling blackouts and an unreliable power grid.

There is no digital display, just some LED's to indicate whether the inverter is on or charging. There is a switch to select what type of batteries you have, flooded, gel cell, AGM, etc. The output is modified sine wave but will run almost anything you hook to it with the exception of most laser printers and some cordless tool chargers. The powerful battery charger quickly and efficiently charges your batteries when your generator or AC grid is connected to the inverter. The 24 volt models have a high surge capacity to start large motors or other loads.

The Xantrex DR Inverters are built to last and built tough. I personally have a Xantrex DR1524 that I use for emergency and back up power and it has never failed me.

They are available in 12 or 24 VDC models with output wattages from 1500 to 3600 watts.

I had one of these inverters with the Trace nameplate on it. It want to warn users that it "will run almost anything you hook to it". The problem comes with more than just laser printers. I ran my house on a 2424 for the house and a 1800W True Sine for all of my electronics and ceiling fans (they are really noisy on the modified sine wave). After three months in the house, 7 of 10 smoke detecters burned and went off when they sensed the smoke, all in a 5 hour night. I re-installed them without the house power (batteries) to avoid this issue.
For years we ran a Calypso washing machine and burned up the brain board 3 times a year for three years. We have been involved with a claim against them an expected to have a free replacement this May.
Then in January, we bought a new Sears Electrolux fancy refridgerator. The interior light gently ramped up when you opened the door, but only when the generator was running. This bothered me so I planned to get a larger pure sine inverter, but I acted too late on this plan. March 20 the volunteer fire department phone tree called me to have me respond to a fire on my street. As I got closer, another phone call told me it was my house. We only managed to save a couple of walls.
The capacitors in the small electronic circuits do not have the strength to deal with the high frequency harmonics of these modified sine inverters. My neighbor has a newer version of the 4024 that uses a 64 step modified sinewave. This is smooth enough to make the ceiling fans operate quietly, so I suspect they will also be OK with the small electronics. Bottomline, these modified sine wave inverters that have fewer steps should be limited more to basic motors and lights. Be careful when buying the fancier microprocessor controlled appliances.
