Harris Hydro

Harris Hydro

The Harris system is an efficient, durable battery charging pelton turbine. With a micro hydro system, water is collected upstream from the hydro and piped downstream to where the turbine is located. The greater the head and flow, the more power you can get out of your micro hydro system. Because DC power can be stored in batteries, these micro hydro systems operate 24 hours a day collecting energy, a little at a time, to be delivered from the batteries as the needed.

With a 2 or 4 nozzle system the multiple nozzle arrangement allows considerably more water to impact the runner, resulting in greater output at any head, and usable power at a lower head. All turbines include an output-optimizing circuit allowing maximum efficiency at any flow rate. Multi-nozzle systems include PVC penstock and individual ball valves on each nozzle.

The pelton type runner is a lost wax cast of silicon bronze. The wheel is 70-90% efficient, depending upon nozzle size and head. The bucket shape allows high efficiency for nozzles. The wheel has a hydraulic diameter of just over 4 inches and each wheel is individually balanced.

I have been using a four nozzle Harris Hydro system to power my house near San Jose California for 10 years. This is a standard Ford alternator (other than the field) that runs the power through a commutator and brushes. Other than replacing these parts every year, this is a very reliable and simple system.
The water feeding system provides much more work than the alternator side. Extraction from the creek is a challenge, requiring regular inspection and cleaning of the intake and filter screen. Leaves, twigs and dirt all challenge me. The best time is during the summer when the flow is steady (although greatly reduced) and the leaves all stay on the trees.
I am considering changing to the permanent magnet, brushless design so I do not have to service the alternator, but a regular inspection that is forced by the requirement to replace the brushes is also a healthy part of naintenance of the power system. It does provide a very cheap consistant source of power for the basic power needs of my house. Be sure to lubricate all of the nuts and bolts on this unit to ensure easy removal during servicing. At 30 psi on a 4 inch pipe, I am getting 16-18 amps @ 24volts. I never have gotten more power out of 4 nozzles, but this year I plan to feed it with two 4 inch pipes to get a little more power. Since i am limited in pressure by the drop available on my property and location of my neighbors outlet from his hydro, I may just buy a second hydro to take advantage of the much greater flow available in the winter.

Dear Sir
Mehr Flow company is one of most well known company in filed of water managment systems in Iran.
we cooperate with international companeis like Halma Group.
I am thinking we can use Harris Hydro as energy supplaier of the battery powered instruments that currently we use for water flow ,pressure control and monitoring.
I hope we can offer your products in our market.I am waiting for your reply.
Best Regards
